With all the media craze over the benefits of the gluten-free diet I investigated the topic to see if this is really true. Is gluten-free diet a good strategy for weight loss?
Gluten free diet is necessary for people with celiac disease, who have gluten-intolerance, but that is only 1% of the population, so what about the rest of us?
This is what the American Dietetic Association has to say:
"At this time there is no scientific evidence supporting the alleged benefit that a gluten-free diet will promote weight loss." They actually went on to say that such a way of eating may result in a diet that is deficient in iron, folate, niacin, zinc, fiber, and carbohydrates.
I am not saying that research wont come up, because it may, but at the moment more research is needed to be done to confirm benefits of a gluten-free diet for weight loss or benefits other than for celiac disease.
Bottom line: if you are on a gluten-free diet and like it, do it. But if you feel deprived, this way of eating is too expensive, then its unnecessary. There is other health changed you can make in your life that have research to show they work and are worthwhile - concentrate on those
