Mindless Eating

Here are some tips from one of my favorite books "Mindless eating, why we eat more than we think" by Brian Wansink.

An Oprah favorite, this book offers easy ways to cut calories throughout your day without noticing! Here are the tips, to get more information and read the study design check out the book or mindlesseating.org

1. Eat out of small containers
In a study, subjects who ate out of a smaller bucket of popcorn ate 53% less than those with a large container of popcorn, REGARDLESS of taste.
  • Buy small portions or pre portion your snacks out of the family size bag when not hungry.
  • Serve your self 20% less food then you usually would, you wont notice the difference and will feel as full.
2. Eat out of appetizer size plates
In a study, subjects ate and served 16% more when eating out of larger plates than smaller plates. We use external cues such as plate size as a dictator of how much we should eat instead of listening to our bodies about when we are full.
  • Eat out of appetizer size plate
  • Listen to your body to see when you are no longer hungry. Remember, it takes 20 minutes for your brain to realize you are full so eat slowly and avoid getting seconds for 15 minutes.

3. Concentrate on your food
People who don't concentrate on their food end up mindlessly eating and consuming more!
  • The only thing you should be eating while watching TV is carrot sticks!
4. Use tall skinny glasses instead of short wide glasses
In a study, subjects looked at the height of the glass and didn't account for the width of the glass. Subjects drinking from tall skinny glasses drank 77% less then subjects drinking soda from a wide short glass.

5. Hide snacks and have washed fruits on the counter instead
  • Serve food in the kitchen and eat it in the dining room. In a study, men ate 29% more and women ate 10% more food when the serving bowls were on table
  • Foods left out are eaten twice as fast. Leave out washed apples and other fruits and hide cookies in the cabinets.
